An important part in the history of the Netherlands is the struggle against water. Without dunes and water barriers, more than half of the Netherlands would be under water. The many dykes, locks, pumping stations, flood barriers, canals and ditches keep the Netherlands habitable. Nowadays, the Netherlands is famous because of its water management and creation of artificial land.
